A Movie is Worth a Thousand Pictures
What is more informative a picture or a movie? They say a picture is worth a thousand
words, if this is true a movie must be worth millions. How many times have you had a
picture taken where you do not look your best, captured at a bad moment in time? If they
had just waited one more minute you would have been your normal radiant self. Why are
these interesting statements?

The Value Added Supplier
In the world we live in we are being constantly bombarded with information from a
variety of sources. The competition for a few seconds of your attention is fierce. In
addition to the more traditional sources of television, radio and print media we are now
overrun with electronic “media” in our e-mail in box, from telemarketing, on the fax
machine or on the internet from “pop ups”, banners and paid for “spots” on a search
engine.

Static Electricity Powder Coating
This is the season of static electricity. It can be painful when you reach for the light switch and it bites you back. Static can also be dangerous as an ignition source if the discharge occurs in a flammable environment and things can go up in smoke unexpectedly.

Why Pascal?
As we all know there are many units used to define pressure. The history of these units is as varied as the units themselves. The widespread use of different units of pressure often leads to sources of confusion and can lead to significant measurement errors.

Is Your Pressure Pump Really Leaking?
Fortunately for the human race the Laws of Physics have not changed since the beginning of time. Archimedes-born in 287 BC- was a practical man and took full advantage of these Laws and the repeatable behavior of Physics. He invented a variety of machinery including a screw pumping device that lifted water from a river to irrigate field crops. Today we employ the same laws and engineering to manufacture a variety of pumps for many different applications.

Humidity Calibration
This month we want to follow up with the topic of humidity and talk a little bit about calibration of humidity instruments, things to look for and things to look out for.

Humidity
You open the front door, ready for a great day, step out and “Pow” it hits you like a wall. It’s hot, humid and the air feels heavy and wet; it is one of those wicked summer days. “It’s not the heat, it’s the humidity”. We’ve all heard that one before, well, what is humidity and how does it affect you in your daily life and work.

A Discussion on Multifunctional Calibrators
In the last issue of Tech Tips we discussed the pros and cons of Single-function Calibrators. In this issue, let’s look at the Multifunctional Calibrator, and the world it works in.

A Discussion on Single-Function Calibrators
There has always been a dilemma amongst Instrumentation Tech’s who are starting out on their own as contractors: what calibration equipment can I buy on a limited budget? The decision ultimately comes down to a choice of a multifunctional calibrator, or a couple of single-function models that will replicate the parameters of a multifunction calibrator. Let’s spend some time to investigate the features and benefits of using singlefunction calibrators. What is the best tool for the job?

How to Choose a Digital Pressure Gauge
Sensor: Is it an all-welded sensor? This can be difficult to determine – you cannot tell by looking at the gauge. Non-welded sensors use o-rings or even thread tape inside the gauge...
Batteries: Does it use standard batteries or something exotic? Lithium batteries are a great technology, but a 9V lithium is really expensive...
Performance: Is the gauge properly temperature compensated? Any specification that says something like: "From 18 to 28°C" as part of the specification does not have adequate...

Choosing a Calibration Service Provider
In the last issue of Tech Tips, we looked at the need to calibrate test and measurement tools (calibrators) on a regular basis. But where do you go for calibration services? These services may be available in-house or you may need to look for an outside service provider (a calibration laboratory). In either case, the selection criteria should be the same and should be based on your needs and if the calibration facility can meet those needs.

Take Good Care of Your Calibrator It Needs to be Calibrated Too!
Taking good care of your calibrator means more than just making sure that valuable equipment is not subject to abuse, severe environmental conditions or physical shock. It also means ensuring that the measurements performed are valid or within specified tolerances.

Selecting the Right Process Loop Calibrator
The essence of quality in a manufacturing process is repeatability.  Once repeatability is established, a process can be adjusted (within its limits of precision)  to produce quality product.  Periodic monitoring and maintenance is then required to observe for drift.....

Ground Current Leaks in Instrument Loops
With the increasing emphasis on operation efficiency, reliability and high accuracy to accommodate better yields through tighter process controls, process measurement and control loops are becoming more and more complex.  Maintaining and calibrating their various components is a critical factor in......

The Importance of Local Gravity Predictions in Pressure Measurement
Pressure is defined as a force over an area.  Deadweight testers or piston gauges have applied this definition over many years by applying a mass load to a piston which has been fitted to a cylinder (ball type gauges use a ceramic ball in place of the piston).  The piston and mass load.....

Traceability of Measurements, who sets the 'standards'?
We often get asked about the traceability of calibration equipment.  In many cases there is confusion as to what traceability is, how it is maintained and how it is reported on a calibration certificate.....

Understanding Accuracy Specifications for Digital Pressure Calibrators and Digital Transfer Pressure Standards
Introduction: Evaluating accuracy specifications when selecting pressure standards and calibration equipment can be a confusing and daunting task. Statements from some manufacturer’s will include all parameters, stability,  hysteresis, linearity, temperature effects and the accuracy of the standard used during calibration while others require that various components be combined to determine the total uncertainty. The following discussion will focus on digital pressure calibration equipment but many of the factors discussed will apply to other types of calibration equipment found in instrument shops and calibration facilities. Let us start our discussion with a review of the terminology of accuracy statements or components of the total uncertainty found on various manufacturers’ specification sheets.....
